EGD With Dilation -- Major Complications
Many types of problems can happen, and we cannot list all of them here. Some of the more common major problems that can happen are:
· Perforation or a tear in the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine
· Reaction to medication
· Bleeding
· Heart or lung problems possibly including:
o Pneumonia
o Irregular heart rhythms
o Lung or heart failure
· Other rare or unlikely events
Depending on the individual situation, a major complication may lead to a hospital stay, blood transfusion or another endoscopic procedure. In rare cases, a major problem may also lead to surgery, permanent disability or even loss of life.
