Breastfeeding and Type 2 Diabetes

Weight Loss, Breastfeeding, and Type 2 Diabetes

After having a baby, you might be ready to shed some of that baby weight, and weight loss is especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. But what if you just can't quite stomach the idea of a strict diet? What if you're lucky just to shower and get out of your pajamas each day and can't even imagine where you'd find time to work out?

Here's some good news: Depending on the duration, breastfeeding can actually help with weight loss. There is no need for a crazy, calorie-restricted diet when breastfeeding because your body needs some extra calories to help with milk production.

Many different factors come into play when talking about weight loss post-baby. These include the type of diet, amount of exercise, and overall general health. Studies have varying results on an exact difference in weight loss, but they do agree that women who are lactating lose more weight than women who aren't breastfeeding.

Don't let type 2 diabetes run your life and hold you back from breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about the benefits of breastfeeding, both for you and your baby.
