Your Symlin dosage will depend on the type of diabetes you have, if there are other medical conditions, and other medications you are taking. The recommended starting dose for type 1 diabetes is 15 mcg, taken before major meals. The recommended starting dose for type 2 diabetes is 60 mcg, also taken before major meals. If necessary, your healthcare provider may increase your Symlin dosage after at least three days without nausea.
Symlin Dosage: An Overview
The dosage of
Symlin® (
pramlintide acetate) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you are currently taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Symlin Dosage for Type 1 Diabetes
The starting dose of Symlin for people with
type 1 diabetes is 15 mcg (micrograms), taken right before major meals. Your healthcare provider will need to adjust the dose of your insulin as well (see the following section). He or she may increase your dose by 15-mcg increments (up to a maximum of 60 mcg) after at least three days without nausea. If nausea does not go away with 45-mcg or 60-mcg doses, the dose can be reduced to 30 mcg. If nausea does not go away at the 30-mcg dose, your healthcare provider may consider stopping Symlin altogether. Again, do not adjust your Symlin dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to.
Symlin Dosage for Type 2 Diabetes
The starting dose of Symlin for people with type 2
diabetes is 60 mcg, taken right before major meals. Your healthcare provider will need to adjust the dose of your insulin, if you are taking it (see the following section). He or she may increase your dose to 120 mcg, taken before major meals, if you have experienced no nausea for at least three to seven days. If nausea does not go away at the 120-mcg dose, the dose can be decreased to 60 mcg. As mentioned, do not adjust your Symlin dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to.
