Sitagliptin and Metformin Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with sitagliptin and metformin. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
 
The most common side effects include but are not limited to:
 
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain).

Sitagliptin and Metformin Drug Interactions

Sitagliptin and metformin can potentially interact with a number of medicines (see Drug Interactions With Sitagliptin and Metformin).
 

Sitagliptin and Metformin: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking sitagliptin and metformin if you have:
 
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
  • Low vitamin B12 levels (pernicious anemia)
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • A history of heart attack or stroke
  • An upcoming surgery or procedure (including x-rays and other radiology procedures)
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:
 
Tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
