What Is Pioglitazone and Metformin XR Used For?

Can Children Take It?

Pioglitazone and metformin XR has not been adequately studied in children, and there is not enough information available to recommend its use. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using pioglitazone and metformin XR for type 2 diabetes in children.

Is Pioglitazone and Metformin XR Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this product for treating something other than type 2 diabetes. This is called an "off-label" use.

At this time, a possible off-label use for pioglitazone and metformin XR is the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). However, because of the possible link between thiazolidinedione medications and heart problems (see Precautions and Warnings With Pioglitazone and Metformin XR), the use of metformin alone (without the pioglitazone) is probably more acceptable for this use.
