Pioglitazone and Metformin XR

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the prescription drug pioglitazone and metformin XR for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The medication, which comes in tablet form, is typically taken once a day with the evening meal. Many people find it effective for managing their diabetes; however, side effects are possible, such as signs of the common cold, nausea, and diarrhea.

What Is Pioglitazone and Metformin XR?

Pioglitazone and metformin XR (Actoplus Met^® XR) is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes (also known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes and adult-onset diabetes). As the name implies, it contains two different diabetes medications: pioglitazone hydrochloride (Actos^®) and extended-release metformin hydrochloride.

Are There Side Effects?

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with pioglitazone and

metformin XR. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.

If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.

The most common side effects of pioglitazone and metformin XR include:

Upper respiratory tract infections (similar to the common cold or flu)
Swelling or water retention (edema) of the lower leg or ankle

Diarrhea
Nausea
Urinary tract infection (UTI).
