Available by prescription only, Oseni is used for treating type 2 diabetes in adults. It is designed for use in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Oseni contains two diabetes medications, and works to control blood glucose levels by decreasing the amount of sugar made by the liver and increasing the amount of insulin produced in response to meals.
Oseni® (alogliptin and pioglitazone) is a prescription medication that contains two diabetes medications: alogliptin (Nesina®) and pioglitazone (Actos®). These two medicines work in different ways to help control blood sugar. Oseni is approved for use in combination with diet and exercise to improve blood glucose (blood sugar) control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a lifelong medical condition associated with high blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form. It occurs when the cells in the body stop responding to insulin like they normally should. This is known medically as insulin resistance.
Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas. It moves glucose from the blood into cells, where it is used for energy. When cells do not properly respond to insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to high blood glucose.
At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by producing more insulin. In time, however, it loses the ability to secrete enough insulin in response to meals.
Because type 2 diabetes generally develops slowly, people will often have few or no symptoms, especially in the beginning of the disease (see Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms for more information). In fact, many people don't even realize they have it. For this reason, a healthcare provider may recommend routine diabetes screening, especially if you have certain risk factors for the disease.
Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. It can also lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease and strokes (see Diabetes Complications).
The goal of diabetes treatment is to prevent the occurrence of long-term complications, which is primarily done by controlling blood sugar levels. Changing unhealthy lifestyle habits is one of the first and most important ways to get blood sugar levels under control. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activity.
If lifestyle changes alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels, medications are added. There are several different types of diabetes medicines, which are divided into different groups based on the way they work in the body. Oseni is just one of many possible medications used for treating type 2 diabetes (see Oseni Alternatives for information about other options).
Oseni will not work to treat type 1 diabetes. It should also not be used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication that can occur in people with diabetes when acids known as ketones build up in the blood.
