Oseni Alternatives

For some people, Oseni (alogliptin and pioglitazone) does not adequately control blood sugar or may result in bothersome side effects. In these cases, there are a number of other alternatives to Oseni for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Some of these alternatives may include lifestyle changes, other diabetes medications, and insulin.

What Are the Alternatives to Oseni?

Oseni® (alogliptin and pioglitazone) is a prescription medication that contains a combination of two diabetes medicines. More specifically, it contains alogliptin (Nesina®), a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor medication, and pioglitazone (Actos®), a thiazolidinedione (or more commonly called "glitazone").

Oseni is approved to treat type 2 diabetes in adults who need better blood sugar control despite an appropriately healthy diet and exercise program. It can be used alone or with other diabetes medications.

While Oseni works well to improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes, it may not be the best choice for some people. Fortunately, there are other treatments a healthcare provider may consider when recommending a diabetes treatment plan for an individual. This includes:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Other oral diabetes medicines
  • Injectable diabetes medicines.

Treating Diabetes Through Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes are an essential component of a diabetes treatment plan, and often the first treatment used. Lifestyle changes include losing weight, eating a healthy diet (see Diabetic Diet), and getting adequate exercise (see Diabetes and Exercise).

In some cases, lifestyle changes are sufficient to control blood sugar levels, especially early in the disease. However, many people will need medicines as well. It is important to keep in mind that even when medications are used, they should be used in addition to diet and exercise.
