Is There a Generic Version of NovoLog Mix 50/50 Available?

NovoLog^® Mix 50/50 (insulin aspart protamine/insulin aspart) is a prescription diabetes medication. It contains 50 percent insulin aspart protamine (an intermediate-acting insulin) and 50 percent insulin aspart (a rapid-acting insulin).

NovoLog Mix 50/50 is made by Novo Nordisk, Inc. At this time, there are no generic versions of the medication (or any other insulins) available.

When Will Generic NovoLog Mix 50/50 Be Available?

At this point, it is impossible to predict when a generic version of NovoLog Mix 50/50 may become available.

There are at least two major obstacles preventing generic NovoLog Mix 50/50 from becoming available. First, NovoLog Mix 50/50 is considered a "biologic" medication and is under different rules and laws than most other medications. At this point, generic biologics, including generic NovoLog Mix 50/50, are not allowed to be manufactured in the United States. Currently, legislation is underway that may change the laws concerning generic biologics (including insulin), but it is not clear when (or even if) this may happen.

Second, NovoLog Mix 50/50 is protected by several unexpired patents that prevent any generic NovoLog Mix 50/50 from being sold in the United States. Even if the laws were changed to allow for generic insulins, the patents for NovoLog Mix 50/50 would need to expire before generic versions could become available.
