Metformin and Contrast Medium

Stopping Metformin for Contrast Medium Procedures

Metformin should be stopped the day of the procedure (or sooner), and you should not restart the medication until at least two days after the procedure. Your healthcare provider should make sure your kidneys are functioning normally (using a blood test) before you restart metformin. Following these precautions greatly reduces your chance of developing lactic acidosis after a procedure involving contrast medium.
