If you have
type 2 diabetes, your healthcare provider may recommend
metformin (
Glucophage®) to help decrease your blood sugar levels. The medication comes in tablet form and is available in five different strengths, including:
- Metformin 500 mg tablets
- Metformin 625 mg tablets
- Metformin 750 mg tablets
- Metformin 850 mg tablets
- Metformin 1000 mg tablets.
A long-acting version of the medicine called
metformin ER is also available.
For children ages 10 to 16, the recommended starting dose of regular metformin is 500 mg twice daily. People 17 years old and over typically take either metformin 850 mg tablets (one tablet, once a day) or metformin 500 mg tablets (one tablet, twice a day).
