Metformin (Glucophage®) is a medicine often used for treating type 2 diabetes. It is available by prescription and comes in several forms, including a tablet form, a liquid version, and two long-acting forms. Metformin can lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes by reducing the amount of sugar made by the liver and decreasing the amount of sugar absorbed into the body. While most people tolerate the drug well, potential side effects include weakness, vomiting, and gas.
