Metanx and Breastfeeding

It is not known if Metanx passes through breast milk or if it would cause problems in a nursing infant. Although the components of this supplement are known to pass through breast milk and are generally considered safe for women who are breastfeeding, Metanx has not been adequately studied to determine if the high doses of certain vitamins would be harmful to a nursing infant.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Metanx?

Metanx® is a vitamin supplement used to manage diabetic peripheral neuropathy and hyperhomocysteinemia (increased levels of homocysteine in the blood). At this time, it is not known if Metanx is safe for use while nursing. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or planning to start, talk with your healthcare provider before taking Metanx.

More Information on Metanx and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done to see if Metanx passes through breast milk in humans or animals. Metanx contains L-methylfolate, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, and methylcobalamin, which are the active forms of folic acid, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and vitamin B12 (cobalamin). Each of these ingredients does pass through breast milk, so it is reasonable to expect that Metanx also passes through breast milk.
The recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 are higher for women who are breastfeeding, and in general, supplementation with these vitamins is considered compatible with nursing. However, Metanx contains doses of these vitamins that are much higher than the recommended dietary intake. There is not enough information to say for certain that such high doses are safe for use while breastfeeding.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Metanx use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
