Metaglip Alternatives: Insulin and Other Injectable Diabetes Medications

Many different types of insulin and other injectable medications are available for type 2 diabetes, including:
 
  • Insulin
  • Incretin mimetics
  • Amylin analogues.
     
Insulin
Different insulins are available, including short-, long-, or intermediate-acting insulins. There is also an inhaled insulin available (Exubera®).
 
Incretin Mimetics
Only one incretin mimetic is currently available, called exenatide (Byetta®). It works by acting like the hormone incretin in the body, increasing insulin production and slowing down digestion.
 
Amylin Analogues
Only one amylin analogue is available, called pramlintide (Symlin®). This medication works like the hormone amylin in the body, increasing insulin production, slowing down digestion, decreasing the production of glucose by the liver, and reducing appetite.
