When it comes to mealtime insulin, you've got several options to choose from.
Good, old-fashioned insulin (such as Novolin R or Humulin R) can be used for mealtimes, however, you've got to plan ahead! Take it about half an hour before a meal, and then make sure to eat in time, as waiting too long to eat can be very dangerous!
For the greatest flexibility, try rapid-acting insulin like Humalog, Novolog, or Apidra (ah-pEE-drah). These allow you take your insulin just as you are starting a meal.
You also have the option of choosing between "old-school" vials and syringes and insulin pens. Both will get the job done, although pens tend to be more user-friendly.
Finally, some mealtime insulins are available premixed with NPH insulin, to decrease the number of shots you take each day.
With all these options, you're sure to find a mealtime insulin that fits into your life! So talk with your healthcare provider to figure out which one works best for you!
