Diabetes Home > Generic Humalog

There are currently no generic Humalog (insulin lispro) products licensed for sale. Humalog is a biologic medication, so it may be awhile before a generic version is able to be introduced. Until then, keep in mind that insulin lispro is the active ingredient in Humalog, which is not the same thing as a generic version.

Generic Humalog: An Overview

Humalog® (insulin lispro) is a prescription diabetes medication. It is a rapid-acting form of insulin that is approved to treat both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As a rapid-acting insulin, Humalog is used primarily to control the rise in blood sugar that occurs after meals. It is also used in insulin pumps.
Humalog is made by Eli Lilly and Company. At this time, no generic versions of Humalog (or any other insulins) are available.

Why Isn't Generic Humalog Available?

Humalog is considered a "biologic" medication and is under different rules and laws than most other medications. In the past, generic biologics were not allowed by law. Although the laws have changed in order to allow manufacturers to make generic biologics, there is still some rulemaking to be done and practical matters to be worked out before such products enter the marketplace.

Is Insulin Lispro the Same as Generic Humalog?

No -- insulin lispro is the active ingredient in Humalog, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that, oftentimes, the active ingredient of a drug is referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
