Diabetes Home > Fenugreek and Breastfeeding

Fenugreek is claimed to be effective for stimulating the production of breast milk. However, before using fenugreek, breastfeeding women should talk to their healthcare providers about the safety and effectiveness of the herbal supplement. At this time, there is no reliable research to suggest that fenugreek is effective or safe for increasing milk production in breastfeeding women.

Fenugreek and Breastfeeding: An Overview

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an herbal remedy used for a variety of different purposes. It is sometimes recommended as a way to increase breast milk production, but it is not known if fenugreek is safe or effective for this use.

Fenugreek and Breastfeeding: What Does the Research Say?

There is no reliable research to suggest that fenugreek is effective, or even safe, for stimulating the production of breast milk. Although some women may have used fenugreek safely and effectively for this purpose, it does not mean that it is really safe and effective. This is why clinical studies are performed. Without adequate studies, there is really no way to know for sure if a product is safe, since studies are needed to find rare side effects, or effective, since many positive experiences with an herb may be merely coincidental.
It should be noted that just because fenugreek is "natural," this does not automatically mean it is safe. Many toxins and poisons are natural, for example.
If you are having trouble with your breast milk supply, it is a good idea to contact your healthcare provider, your child's healthcare provider, or a lactation consultant. These professionals can help you determine if you really are "low" and can help you find ways to increase your supply safely.
