Kombiglyze XR Alternatives

If Kombiglyze XR is not adequately controlling your type 2 diabetes, or if you are experiencing bothersome side effects, your healthcare provider will likely recommend an alternative to Kombiglyze XR. Other options include certain lifestyle changes, another oral diabetes drug, or insulin or some other injectable medication. Each has different actions in the body and may be more effective at controlling your condition.

Are There Alternatives to Kombiglyze XR?

Kombiglyze™ XR (saxagliptin/metformin ER) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Kombiglyze XR is generally effective in treating diabetes, and most people tolerate it well. However, as with all medicines, side effects can occur or the medicine may not completely control diabetes. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to Kombiglyze XR for type 2 diabetes.

Some of these Kombiglyze XR alternatives include:

Other Oral Diabetes Medicines

There are many other different types of oral diabetes drugs available to treat type 2 diabetes, including:

  • Dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitors
  • Biguanides
  • Sulfonylureas
  • Meglitinides
  • Thiazolidinediones
  • Alpha glucosidase inhibitors
  • Ergot alkaloids
  • Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors)
  • Bile acid sequestrants
  • Other combination medications (Kombiglyze is a combination medication).

Dipeptidyl Peptidase Inhibitors
Saxagliptin, one of the active ingredients in Kombiglyze XR, is part of a class of diabetes medications called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. DPP-4 is an enzyme that breaks down incretin hormones.

As a DPP-4 inhibitor, saxagliptin slows down the breakdown of incretin hormones, increasing the level of these hormones in the body. It is this increase in incretin hormones that is responsible for the beneficial actions of saxagliptin, including increasing insulin production in response to meals and decreasing the amount of glucose (sugar) that the liver produces.

Saxagliptin is available by itself under the brand name Onglyza®. There are also three other diabetes medications closely related to saxagliptin: sitagliptin (Januvia®), linagliptin (Tradjenta®), and alogliptin (Nesina®).
