Insulin and Other Injectable Diabetes Medicines

Insulin is the primary treatment for people with type 1 diabetes. In addition, some people with type 2 diabetes are treated with insulin. Insulin is available in short-, rapid-, long-, or intermediate-acting forms.

In addition to insulin, other diabetes medicines given as injections include:

  • Amylin analogs
  • Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists.

Amylin Analogs
Pramlintide (Symlin®) is the only currently available amylin analog. It works by mimicking the actions of amylin in the body. Amylin is a hormone that is made and secreted, along with insulin, by the pancreas. By acting like amylin, pramlintide slows down the emptying of food from the stomach (which slows down the increase in blood sugar after meals), decreases the production of glucose by the liver, and reduces appetite.

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists
These medicines, also known as incretin mimetics, mimic the actions of incretin hormones in the body. Incretin is an important hormone that helps control blood sugar. This action increases insulin production in response to meals and decreases the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Available incretin mimetics include:
