Jentadueto Uses

Using Jentadueto as Part of Diabetes Treatment

The main goal of any diabetes treatment is to lower your blood sugar levels enough, as measured by your hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), to reduce your risk for developing problems related to diabetes (see Diabetes Complications).

Any type 2 diabetes treatment begins with lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, a diabetic diet, and exercise. If lifestyle changes are not effective at managing the condition, medication such as Jentadueto may be necessary.

Some diabetes medications force the pancreas to produce more insulin, regardless of blood sugar levels (see Jentadueto Alternatives). These medications are effective but can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). Because Jentadueto increases insulin only in response to high blood sugar levels, the risk of dangerously low blood sugar is minimal.

How Does It Work?

Jentadueto contains two different diabetes medications. Linagliptin is part of a class of diabetes medications called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. DPP-4 is an enzyme that breaks down incretin hormones.

As a DPP-4 inhibitor, linagliptin slows the breakdown of incretin hormones, increasing the level of these hormones in the body. It is this increase in incretin hormones that is responsible for the beneficial actions of linagliptin, such as increasing insulin production in response to meals and decreasing the amount of glucose (sugar) that the liver produces.

Because incretin hormones are more active in response to higher blood sugar levels, the risk of dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is low with linagliptin.

Jentadueto also contains metformin, a biguanide medication. Metformin works in several ways, such as:

  • Decreasing the amount of sugar (glucose) the liver produces
  • Reducing the amount of sugar the body absorbs from the diet
  • Increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors to improve how the body responds to its own insulin.

All of these effects help to control blood sugar levels.
