Janumet XR Side Effects

While a majority of people taking Janumet XR tolerate the medicine well, side effects are possible. Common ones include diarrhea, headaches, and nausea. In addition, there are some more serious reactions that you should report immediately to your healthcare provider, such as any signs of pancreatitis, lactic acidosis, or allergic reactions.

An Introduction to Janumet XR Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Janumet® XR (sitagliptin and metformin extended-release) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Janumet XR. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects With Janumet XR

While Janumet XR has not been studied specifically in clinical trials, the short-acting version of the medication, Janumet® (sitagliptin and metformin) has been studied. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking this drug were carefully documented and compared to those that occurred in a similar group of people taking either a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients) or the individual components of Janumet alone.

As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo or the other medicines. In these studies, the most common side effects included:

  • Diarrhea -- in up to 7.5 percent of people
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (such as the common cold) -- up to 6.2 percent
  • Headache -- up to 5.9 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 4.8 percent
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain -- up to 3 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 2.2 percent
  • Extremely low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) -- up to 1.6 percent.
