Invokana Mechanism of Action

Invokana® (canagliflozin) is a prescription medication licensed to help control blood sugar levels in adults who have type 2 diabetes. It comes as a tablet that is taken once a day.
As a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, Invokana's mechanism of action involves allowing glucose (sugar) in the blood to be filtered through the kidneys and out through the urine. Because this glucose is lost through the urine rather than being reabsorbed into the bloodstream, it can help to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
