Because insulin injections are painful and inconvenient, researchers have long been searching for different ways to administer insulin. However, the inhaled insulin (Exubera) that initially created much excitement turned out to be a failure due to low sales. Since then, interest in finding alternative ways to administer insulin has declined. However, there is hope that insulin may someday be given as a skin patch, a nasal spray, or even as a sublingual (under the tongue) tablet.
