Insulin is a medication approved to treat diabetes. There are several types of this medication available, including some that act quickly and others that stay in the body for a long period of time. The medication must be injected subcutaneously (just under the skin) in the abdomen, upper arm, or thigh. Possible side effects of insulin may include reactions at the injection site and weight gain.
