Humulin R Overdose

Overdose With U-500 Humulin R

In addition to the standard U-100 concentration, Humulin R also comes in a U-500 concentration (five times as concentrated as regular insulin). Small inaccuracies in measuring this very concentrated insulin can easily result in an overdose. Also, using standard U-100 insulin syringes to measure U-500 Humulin R can easily result in a five-fold overdose. For this reason, it is recommended to use tuberculin syringes (not insulin syringes) for U-500 Humulin R.

Treatment for a Humulin R Overdose

Treatment for a Humulin R overdose will involve supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. For example, supportive treatment options may include:

  • Fluids through an intravenous line (IV)
  • A glucagon injection to increase blood sugar
  • A sugar (glucose) solution to increase blood sugar
  • Other treatments based on complications that occur.

It is important that you seek prompt medical attention if you believe you may have overdosed on Humulin R.
