Humulin R Dosage

There is no set Humulin R dosage that works for all people or for the same person in all situations. Carbohydrate counting and measuring your blood sugar levels before and after meals may help you determine an accurate dosage. Generally, smaller doses of Humulin R are necessary after meals with a low carbohydrate content, while larger doses are necessary after meals with a high carbohydrate content.

Humulin R Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Humulin® R (regular insulin) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The carbohydrate content of your meals
  • How you respond to Humulin R (especially as measured by your blood sugar levels)
  • Your current dose of other insulins
  • Other medications you are taking, including other diabetes medications
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is the case with any medicine, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Humulin R Dosing Guidelines

There is no "standard" Humulin R dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. Humulin R is used to control the rise in blood sugar due to meals. It begins working within 30 to 60 minutes, peaks between 50 and 120 minutes, and lasts for 5 to 8 hours (although there may be considerable variation depending on the particular individual).

You may be asked to measure your blood sugar before and after meals, and your healthcare provider may recommend carbohydrate counting. Both of these things can help you and your healthcare provider know how to dose your Humulin R. In general, smaller doses of Humulin R are necessary for meals with a low carbohydrate content, while larger doses are necessary for meals with a high carbohydrate content.
