Humalog Side Effects

Skin thickening, pitting, or a reaction at the injection site and low blood sugar levels are potential side effects that may occur with Humalog. Side effects of the drug can be potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider. Such side effects of Humalog include an allergic reaction and symptoms of low blood sugar, which may include dizziness, sweating, or shakiness.

An Introduction to Humalog Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Humalog® (insulin lispro). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, many people tolerate it quite well. If Humalog side effects do occur, they are often minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Humalog. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Humalog side effects with you.)

Possible Side Effects of Humalog

Humalog has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a different form of insulin, usually regular human insulin.

While studies for most medications compare the medication to a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients), this is usually not possible for diabetes medications like Humalog. It would be unethical to give a placebo to people with diabetes, as it is essential to keep blood sugar under control. This is why Humalog was compared to other insulins rather than to a placebo.

Based on these studies, possible Humalog side effects (also seen with all other forms of insulin) include:

  • Skin thickening or pitting at the injection site
  • A skin reaction at the injection site
  • Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia).
