Humalog and Breastfeeding: An Overview
At this time, it is not known whether
Humalog® (
insulin lispro) passes through breast milk, although it is not predicted to cause problems when used during breastfeeding. Most healthcare providers consider Humalog safe for breastfeeding women -- safer than most oral
diabetes medications. However, you should still talk with your healthcare provider before taking Humalog if you are breastfeeding or plan to start.
Can I Take Humalog While Breastfeeding?
No studies have been conducted to see if Humalog passes through breast milk. However, even if it does pass through breast milk, the drug would be destroyed in the digestive tract of the infant.
Insulin (including Humalog) is a protein that is digested and made inactivate when taken by mouth. This is why insulin cannot be taken by mouth. Almost all healthcare providers are comfortable recommending Humalog to women who are breastfeeding.
