Does Goji Work?

Scientific Evidence on How Well Goji Works

There is almost no scientific evidence that goji is effective for any use. However, this does not necessarily mean that it does not work. It just means that very little research on goji has been performed in humans. Studies in laboratory animals may be promising, but human studies are necessary before any conclusions can be made, since humans often react differently to substances, compared to laboratory animals.
One small preliminary study suggested that goji juice may enhance energy levels, athletic performance, sleep quality, ease of awakening, ability to focus on activities, mental sharpness, calmness, and feelings of health and contentment. It also suggested that goji juice could reduce stress and fatigue. However, the study also looked for changes in body weight, body mass index, blood pressure, pulse rate, and visual sharpness, but no changes were found.

Final Thoughts on the Effectiveness of Goji

There is little evidence to show that goji really works for most uses. In general, this reflects a lack of studies using the product. Some of the claims about the health benefits of goji should be viewed with skepticism until more research is available.
