How to Administer Glucagon

If you or a loved one has just been prescribed glucagon, you may have some questions about how to administer it. Glucagon comes in a kit that contains everything needed to prepare and inject the medication in case of a low blood sugar emergency. A person will typically inject this medication just under the skin, although trained healthcare professionals can inject it into a vein or muscle. The skin of a buttock, arm, or thigh is typically recommended.

When used in an emergency situation, the person should wake up within 15 minutes. If he or she does not awaken after 15 minutes, administer glucagon again and seek immediate medical assistance.
