Glipizide Strengths

If you have type 2 diabetes (also known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes), your healthcare provider may recommend one of the many different strengths of glipizide (Glucotrol®). This prescription medication comes in the form of regular and extended-release tablets.
Regular glipizide tablets are available in two strengths:
  • 5 mg
  • 10 mg.
The extended-release tablets are available in three strengths:
  • 2.5 mg
  • 5 mg
  • 10 mg.
With the regular glipizide tablets, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg, taken once daily before breakfast. Your healthcare provider may increase your dose slowly, if necessary, up to a maximum of 40 mg total per day.
For the extended-release tablets, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg, taken once daily with breakfast. This may be increased, if necessary, up to 20 mg once a day.
