Fortamet® is a medication that is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The prescription drug, which is a long-acting form of metformin, can help decrease the amount of sugar made by the liver and reduce the amount of sugar absorbed into the body. By controlling blood sugar levels in this way, Fortamet is also effective in decreasing the risk of long-term complications often seen with diabetes, such as heart disease. Potential side effects of Fortamet may include gas, diarrhea, or heartburn.
