Diabetic neuropathy is the medical term for damage to the nervous system from diabetes. Research has shown that people who keep their blood glucose levels close to normal are able to lower their risk of diabetic neuropathy.
Ideas to help prevent diabetic neuropathy include:
- Keep your blood glucose as close to normal as you can
- Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
- Don't smoke
- Take care of your feet (see Diabetic Foot Care)
- Tell your doctor about any problems you have with your hands, arms, feet, and legs or your stomach, bowels, or bladder.

Have problems when you have sex
Cannot always tell when your blood glucose is too low
Feel dizzy when you go from lying down to sitting or standing.
