Diets for Diabetics
If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, it's easy to become confused about the specifics of the diabetic diet. You may have questions such as:
- What should I eat?
- How often should I eat?
- How much should I eat?
Fortunately, meal planning doesn't have to be complicated. Many people find it helpful to use the Diabetes Food Pyramid as a general guide of what and how much to eat each day. It is similar to the Food Pyramid you see on many food packages. The Diabetes Food Pyramid is divided into six groups. You should eat more foods from the largest group at the base of the pyramid and fewer foods from the smaller groups at the top of the pyramid.
While the Diabetes Food Pyramid provides important guidelines, it cannot replace a diet created by a dietitian or doctor. The number of servings diabetics need every day varies from person to person, so this food pyramid offers a range of servings.
