Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism -- the way the body digests food for energy and growth. People with the condition do not make insulin or do not use insulin properly (or both), which causes glucose to build up in the blood. High glucose levels can cause serious health problems over time, such as heart and blood vessel disease, kidney failure, and blindness. Treatment for diabetes may involve exercise, a healthy diet, weight control, and medications.
