Diabetes is a chronic disorder that affects an estimated 18.2 million people in the United States. It is a condition in which the body cannot properly convert food into energy. There are three main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. If left uncontrolled, these conditions can ultimately lead to nerve damage, strokes, and kidney failure. A treatment plan for diabetes may include exercise, a proper diet, and medications (in some cases).
