Diabetes Complications Relating to Sex

Troublesome changes in sexual function are common health problems encountered by people as they age. Having diabetes may result in early onset and increased severity of these problems. Sexual complications of diabetes are related to the nerve damage diabetes can cause. Men may have difficulty with erections or ejaculation (known as impotence, erectile dysfunction, or just ED). Women may have problems with sexual response and vaginal lubrication.

Heart Disease and Stroke
 
  • Heart disease and stroke account for about 65 percent of deaths in people with diabetes.
     
  • Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about two to four times higher than adults without diabetes.
     
  • The risk for stroke is two to four times higher among people with diabetes.
     
High Blood Pressure
About 73 percent of adults with diabetes have blood pressure greater than or equal to 130/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) or take blood pressure medication.
