While eating a healthy diet is important for everyone, it's especially important if you have diabetes.
Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes -- what, when, and how much you eat will affect the levels of glucose in your blood. Glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy. So it's important to eat healthy foods in the right amounts to help keep your blood glucose at the proper levels.
If you have diabetes, the Diabetic Food Pyramid is a good guide on what and how much to eat each day. The Diabetes Food Pyramid is divided into six groups. You should eat more foods from the largest group at the base of the pyramid and less from the smaller groups at the top.
The number of servings needed each day isn't the same for everyone, so a range of servings is given to make sure you get the foods you need for good health.
The food groups and suggested servings per day as part of this diet include:
* Grains, Beans, and Starchy Vegetables. These are good source of B vitamins and fiber. Six or more servings are recommended per day.
*Fruits contain vitamins C and A, potassium, folate, and fiber. Try to get 3 to 4 servings per day.
* Vegetables also provide vitamins A and C, folate, and fiber. Three to five servings are recommended per day.
* Milk and yogurt are good sources of calcium, protein, and vitamins A and D. Aim for 2 to 3 servings per day.
* Meats and meat substitutes provide iron, zinc, B vitamins, and protein. You should have two to three servings per day.
The foods at the tip of the pyramid, including fats, sweets, and alcohol, should only be eaten in small amounts. Fats and oils should be limited because they are high in calories. Sweets are high in sugar and should only be eaten once in a while.
