Cycloset Uses

Cycloset is a drug that can help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines and is the first and only diabetes medication of its kind. Although there are currently no universally accepted off-label uses of Cycloset, there are off-label uses for other forms of bromocriptine.

What Is Cycloset Used For?

Cycloset (bromocriptine mesylate) is a prescription diabetes medication. Specifically, it is approved to be used in combination with diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes (see Diabetes Types). It is also sometimes called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which body cells do not respond to insulin as well as they normally should. As a result, the body cells remove sugar from the bloodstream very well (which is why people with type 2 diabetes have high blood sugar).

Over time, high blood sugar can lead to a number of problems, including diabetic impotence, diabetic neuropathy, kidney failure, and heart disease (see Diabetes Complications). The cause of type 2 diabetes is not fully understood, although it is known that obesity and genetics play an important role in type 2 diabetes.

Cycloset can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medication and is the first (and currently only) diabetes medication of its kind.
