Byetta Drug Interactions

Byetta drug interactions with other medications, such as acetaminophen, antibiotics, and oral contraceptives, can cause the body to metabolize the medications differently than intended and may lead to problems. Because Byetta can slow the movement of medications through the digestive tract, it may make some of these medications less effective. Therefore, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dosage of these medications.

An Overview of Byetta Drug Interactions

Byetta^® (exenatide) can potentially interact with a few medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to Byetta interactions include:

Acetaminophen (Tylenol^®)
Antibiotics
Lovastatin (Mevacor^®)
Oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
Warfarin (Coumadin^®, Jantoven^®).

Byetta Interactions Explained

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

Taking acetaminophen after taking Byetta can decrease the amount of acetaminophen absorbed into your blood, perhaps making it less effective.

This interaction does not seem to occur if acetaminophen is taken before a Byetta injection.

Antibiotics

Byetta can slow the movement of medications through the digestive tract, and this may make some antibiotics less effective. To avoid this problem, take your doses of antibiotics at least one hour before a Byetta injection. If you must take your antibiotic with food, take it with a snack.

Lovastatin (Mevacor)

Taking Byetta with lovastatin can decrease the amount of lovastatin in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your dose of lovastatin.
