Byetta 10 mcg

There are two strengths of
Byetta® (exenatide) on the market today, and Byetta 10 mcg prefilled pens are the strongest strength available. This medication is also available in 5 mcg prefilled pens. Byetta is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes.

The dose of Byetta your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • How well your diabetes is controlled
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you are currently taking.

The recommended starting dose of Byetta for treating type 2 diabetes is Byetta 5 mcg injected twice daily. After one month, your healthcare provider may increase your dose to Byetta 10 mcg twice daily if needed.

When adding Byetta to oral diabetes drugs such as metformin (Fortamet®, Glucophage®, Glucophage XR®, Glumetza® or Riomet®), pioglitazone (Actos®), or rosiglitazone (Avandia®), the dose of the oral medication does not usually need to be adjusted. However, when adding Byetta to sulfonylureas, the dose of the sulfonylurea may need to be reduced to decrease the risk of low blood sugar.
