People who have type 2 diabetes may benefit from Byetta® (exenatide). This prescription medication works by mimicking the actions of incretin hormones in the body. As an incretin mimetic, the drug increases insulin production in response to meals and decreases the amount of glucose (sugar) that the liver produces. It also slows the emptying of food from the stomach, which reduces the amount of food that people eat. Although most people tolerate Byetta well, it can cause side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness.
