Bydureon Side Effects
Some of the most common side effects that have been reported with Bydureon include constipation, nausea, and a lump at the injection site. For most people, reactions to the drug do not require treatment or can be treated easily. However, call your healthcare provider immediately if you develop seizures, confusion, or a lump in the neck, as complications such as these need prompt medical care.
Just like any medicine, Bydureon™ (extended-release exenatide) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Bydureon. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Bydureon has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, some of the people were treated with Bydureon, while others were treated with other diabetes medications. In some of the studies, Bydureon or the other diabetes medications were used alone; in other studies, they were used in addition to the existing diabetes medications that people were already taking. In all of the studies, the potential side effects were carefully documented and compared.
In these studies, the most common Bydureon side effects included:
- Nausea -- in up to 11 percent of people
- Diarrhea -- up to 10.9 percent
- Lump at the injection site -- up to 10.5 percent
- Constipation -- up to 8.5 percent
- Headache -- up to 8.1 percent
- Indigestion or heartburn -- up to 7.3 percent
- Minor cases of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) -- up to 2 percent.
The specific percentages discussed here were taken from studies in which people were only using Bydureon. Information on potential side effects from studies that combined Bydureon with other diabetes medications was not included, as this data may not accurately represent true Bydureon side effects.
Weight loss is a fairly predictable side effect of Bydureon. In studies, people lost an average of about five pounds in 24 weeks. This weight loss is most likely due to the nausea and diarrhea that the medication often causes.
