Generic Avandaryl

When Will Generic Avandaryl Be Available?

The first patent for Avandaryl expired in March 2012. However, no generic versions are available yet. This suggests that at least one later-expiring patent is still protecting the drug from generic competition. The next patent for Avandaryl is set to expire in October 2015. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of Avandaryl could become available.
However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend the exclusivity period of Avandaryl beyond 2015. This could include such things as other patents for specific Avandaryl uses or lawsuits. Once Avandaryl goes off patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Avandaryl drug.

What If My Insurance Won't Cover Avandaryl?

Some insurance companies that do not cover Avandaryl may cover the two medications in Avandaryl separately. In other words, even if Avandaryl is not covered, you may have coverage for Avandia (rosiglitazone) and glimepiride (Amaryl). You would need two separate prescriptions from your healthcare provider, and you would likely need to pay two co-pays. For some people, this option may be more cost effective, although it would result in needing to take more tablets per day.
