Actoplus Met and Diabetes Control
One of the most effective medications used to control diabetes is Actoplus Met® (pioglitazone and metformin). Keep in mind, however, that this drug is only approved to treat type 2 diabetes. Actoplus Met is not effective against type 1 diabetes. It comes in tablet form and is usually taken once or twice a day.
Actoplus Met works to keep diabetes under control in a few different ways. One of the active ingredients, metformin, causes a decrease in the amount of sugar the body produces, as well as a decrease in how much sugar the body absorbs from the diet. The other component, pioglitazone, helps the body respond better to its natural insulin. The result is an overall decrease in blood sugar.
Researchers know that Actoplus Met is effective at providing diabetes control because of the results of clinical trials. In these studies, people taking Actoplus Met lowered their HbA1c by up to 0.64 percent, on average, while people taking metformin alone increased their HbA1c by 0.19 percent, and fasting blood sugar levels decreased by 42.8 mg/dL, on average.
